Request to remit business rates (joint names)

Letter in sole names

You can choose to send a letter in your own name or in joint names. You may have a debt in joint names, or want to write to your creditors together because you have worked out a joint budget.

We are writing to you about our unpaid business rates. We understand that you may, under section 49 of the Local Government Finance Act 1988, remit all or part of our business rates arrears.



We enclose our budget sheet and list of creditors. Our budget sheet shows that we have no spare income to enable us to make an offer of payment. You will see that we are finding it difficult to maintain basic household expenditure. This confirms that if the debt is pursued, it would cause hardship to us (and our family). We suggest that it would be reasonable in these circumstances for you to remit this debt. If you continue to pursue the debt, it is likely to be costly and not in the interests of local ratepayers.



We are happy to provide any further information that you request. We look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.
